Fourth of July in Roanoke, VA

Are you ready for the Fourth of July?  There are a number of different events going on in Roanoke this year!  If you don’t have anything planned, you may want to check out one of these celebrations. The Four on the Fourth is a four-mile run that benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia.  It begins on Reserve Avenue at 8:00 a.m.  Before shooting off fireworks, why not run for charity? While there was some doubt about the annual Fourth of July concert, it has been confirmed that the event will take place as usual.  There was some concern regarding funding for the Music for Americans concert and fireworks display, but anonymous donors and the WBDJ7 Berglund Automotive Group stepped up to pay the tab.  The concert will take play on July 4th at the River’s Edge Sports Complex at 5:00 p.m., with the fireworks display kicking off at 9:30 p.m. If you’d rather stay home, here are some other things you could do to celebrate the Fourth: •    Have a family cook out •    Buy a volleyball net and invite friends over for a game •    If it’s too hot to be outdoors, have a movie marathon. •    Have a picnic dinner at a local park. Don’t forget to order a bright bouquet of Fourth of July Flowers in Roanoke,...

Flower Therapy – Just How Effective Is It?

You may have heard about how flowers can help us stop stressing and make us relax, but is it true?  Can flowers really help us relax, or is it just an urban myth?  The truth is that yes, the look and smell of flowers really can help with stress and anxiety, and there are some scientific studies to back it up! One of these studies was done by the State University of New Jersey.  Their study showed that flowers can trigger some happy emotions.  Their volunteers participated in a study for ten months.  During this time, the team sent their volunteers flowers and took notes on how their behavior and their emotions changed.   The results showed several interesting facts.  First, when participates received flowers, they immediately became happier.  They smiled and were excited to see who the flowers were from (the study had spouses, friends, and family members send flowers), even though they knew they were in a study about flowers. The study also showed that flowers actually have long-term results.  People tended to feel happy several days after receiving flowers, especially if they put the bouquet in a place where they would often see it.  Some people said they felt happy because the flowers were so bright and smelled good, while others said seeing the flowers reminded them of who sent it. A number of participants said that overall they felt less lonely and sad even after the flowers had wilted.  They felt more connected to other people and were more confident that they were loved and appreciated by others. Next time you send someone flowers, know that you’re doing more than just giving them an arrangement of bright blooms.  Instead, you’re making them happy for days.  So don’t wait: send flowers in Roanoke, VA,...

Make Father’s Day a Celebration!

Father’s Day is June 17th.  While the fireworks are usually saved for next month, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t make Father’s Day a celebration of your love and admiration for your dad.  There are a number of things you can do to celebrate the day. Fix Dad his favorite meal.  While it might mean you’ll be cooking all morning for lunch, it’s worth it to see your father happy and full of great food.  Have the entire family over and spend the day eating, visiting, and enjoying each other’s company. Another option is to take Dad out to his favorite restaurant.  This means you don’t have to cook or do any of the cleaning.  The only downside is that you will probably need a reservation since many restaurants tend to fill up on the holidays.  This also means you might feel rushed to eat and leave so the table will be available.  One way to handle this is to have a late lunch or an early dinner so you avoid the crowd. No matter which option you decide on, to really make Father’s Day a celebration, invite the entire family.  Sure, it may be difficult to find a restaurant that will seat 20 or so, which means you may have to limit lunch to just the immediate family.  Afterwards, though, you could meet up at your house or at a nearby park to spend the day with everyone. One way of handling extended family is to have a small breakfast celebration with just your spouse and your kids, then meet up with your parents and all your siblings and their families for lunch or for an afternoon of visiting.  You could even spread Father’s Day over a few days if you have several different dads to honor. Of course, you’ll want to get your dad a nice Father’s Day gift.  Hint: a tie probably isn’t the best gift unless your dad loves ties.  Today’s dads love iPads, smart phones, and blu-ray players. ...

Birthday Fun Ideas in Roanoke, VA

Is your birthday coming up, or are you planning a birthday party for someone in Roanoke, VA?  There are a number of different things you can do.  It does take a little planning to pull off the perfect birthday party, but if you have some help (it’s always advised to pull in another friend or two to help with a party) and a little bit of time, you can make it happen! If the party is for an adult, you’ve got several different options.  The first is to have it at one of Roanoke’s fine restaurants.  Downtown Roanoke has some great options, including Alejandro’s, La Finca, and Table 50.  What’s great about the downtown area is that there’s a lot you can do within walking distance, and there are many varieties of food available.  French, Greek, Indian, Italian, seafood, steak, sushi, pizza…you’ve got it all in a very small space.  Before or after dinner, your birthday group could check out some of the nearby jewelry shops, look at local artwork, or even visit the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Maybe that’s not what you want to do for your birthday.  If you or the person you’re planning the party for enjoys the outdoors, the beautiful mountains that are located near Roanoke Valley are great for hiking, bike riding, or even just picnicking.  They’re pretty amazing during the summer when everything’s in bloom.  Guys, want to spend your birthday fishing?  Smith Mountain Lake is the place near Roanoke to catch some awesome trophy bass! If you’re giving the birthday party for a kid, the outdoors is still a good idea.  You can have the party at a park, in your backyard, or even back out near the lake.  The Putt Putt Family Fun Center and the Mill Mountain Zoo are other great outdoor options.  This is, of course, weather permitting.  It’s always wise to have a backup idea. If the outdoors isn’t an option, Roanoke has several indoor areas that the special birthday boy or girl...
